A. The HPL Framework in your School

Who: Whole staff
How long: Half a day
Outcome: Staff understand the framework of 20 cognitive domains (ACPs) and 10 behavioural characteristics (VAAs) how they can be introduced in their lessons
Overview:

  • Working through the framework and approach of HPL in terms of 20 cognitive domains (ACPs) and 10 behavioural characteristics (VAAs)
  • Understanding the ACPs and VAAs and consider the implications for teaching and learning
  • Applying this framework to school and classroom teaching
  • Understanding what the progression routes are for ACPs and VAAs.

 

B. The Whole School Pulse Check

Who: Middle and Senior Leaders
How long: Half a day
Outcome: The middle and senior leaders of the school assess the strengths of the school in relation to the HPL framework and where the school needs to make progress
Overview:

  • Understanding the four HPL Award standards and progression routes
  • Being able to appropriately and accurately assess your school against these Standards
  • Developing the best mechanisms to carry out your own school’s Pulse Check.


C. Developing the Whole School Road Map

Who: Middle and Senior Leaders
How long: Half a day
Outcome: The middle and senior leaders develop an outline plan for introducing HPL in the school
Overview:

  • Understanding what needs to be developed in your own school to progress on each of the four HPL Standards
  • Developing an appropriate timescale and method for doing this
  • Identifying what support you need
  • Understanding how you will evaluate your progress and at what point you may wish to go for the HPL Award.

 

D. Getting to Grips with the ACPs and VAAs

Who: Whole staff
How long: Half a day
Outcome: Staff develop some practical approaches to using HPL in their lessons
Overview:

  • Looking at practical classroom strategies to apply HPL
  • ‘Deconstructing’ lessons and pieces of work to identify the ACPs and VAAs covered in very overt ways with students
  • Planning new lessons and schemes of work to ensure that specific ACPs and VAAs are identified and reinforced.


E. HPL for Parents

Who: Parents/Carers
How long: 2 hours
Outcome: Parents understand the school’s approach to HPL and how to support their child at home
Overview:

  • Introducing parents and carers to HPL and encouraging them to consider the benefits for children and for the school
  • Helping the parents to understand how to re-enforce HPL at home and support their child’s progress.
